Why Do Candles Tunnel? Causes and Simple Fixes

A candle can have the most beautiful scent, an elegant vessel and a promisingly long burn time, then leave a stubborn ring of unmelted wax around the glass. So, why do candles tunnel? Usually, the first few burns were too short for the wax to melt evenly from edge to edge. The good news is that tunnelling is common, often fixable and easy to prevent once you know what your candle needs.

What candle tunnelling looks like

Candle tunnelling happens when the wick melts a narrow channel straight down through the centre of the wax, while a thick wall of unused wax remains around the sides. Instead of a smooth, full melt pool across the top, you will see a deep hole forming around the wick.

It can make a candle look less polished, but the bigger issue is performance. As the tunnel gets deeper, the wick may sit below the top edge of the wax, making it harder to light. The fragrance may also feel less noticeable because less wax is melting at one time. In a jar candle, that unused wax can mean you miss out on many of the burn hours you paid for.

Tunnelling is especially frustrating with premium scented candles intended to bring warmth and ambience to a living room, bedroom or bathroom. Fortunately, it does not automatically mean the candle is poor quality. Burn conditions matter just as much as the candle itself.

Why do candles tunnel in the first place?

The most common cause is extinguishing a candle too soon, particularly on its first burn. Wax has a memory, meaning it tends to melt to a similar width on future burns. If you light a candle for 30 minutes and only the centre softens, it may continue burning within that smaller circle next time.

A good rule is to allow enough time for the surface wax to melt close to the edges of the vessel before putting it out. Depending on the candle’s diameter, this may take two to four hours. A wide, multi-wick candle may need a little longer, while a smaller candle will often reach a full melt pool sooner.

The wick can also play a role. A wick that is too small for the candle’s diameter creates a small flame and limited melt pool. This may be a manufacturing issue, although it can also happen when the wick has become too short, buried beneath wax or affected by a build-up of carbon at the tip.

Where you burn your candle matters, too. A strong draught from an open window, ceiling fan, heater or air conditioner can push the flame to one side. This creates uneven melting and may leave wax clinging to one edge of the glass. A candle burning in a very cold room can also take longer to create an even melt pool.

Fragrance load, wax type and vessel shape all influence performance. Natural waxes such as soy can have a softer appearance and may develop uneven surfaces after burning, while blended waxes can behave differently again. These details are not always signs of tunnelling. The key distinction is whether a narrow hole is growing deeper with each burn.

The first burn sets the tone

Think of the first burn as the foundation for the candle’s life. When you have set aside a quiet evening, light your candle at a time when you can let it burn properly rather than rushing to extinguish it as you head out or go to bed.

For many medium jar candles, two to three hours is enough to establish a broad melt pool. Larger formats may need longer. Check the candle label for the maker’s instructions, as wax blends and wick styles vary between brands.

There is a trade-off here. You should not leave a candle burning indefinitely just to chase a perfect melt pool. Most candle makers recommend a maximum burn time of around four hours at a time, and you should always follow the directions supplied with your particular candle. If the wax has not fully reached the edge by then, extinguish it, let it cool completely and reassess on the next burn.

How to fix a tunnelling candle

If your candle has already started tunnelling, you may still be able to recover it. The safest simple method is to give it a longer, supervised burn in a draught-free spot, allowing the heat to gradually soften more of the wax surface. This works best when the tunnel is still shallow.

Before lighting, check the wick. If it is long, crooked or topped with a black mushroom-like carbon build-up, trim it to around 5 mm. A neatly trimmed wick supports a steadier flame and can help the candle burn more evenly. Remove the trimmed piece from the wax before lighting so it does not become debris in the melt pool.

The foil method, used carefully

For a more established tunnel, some candle lovers use a loose foil cover to reflect heat back towards the wax at the sides. Make a foil tent over the top of the vessel, leaving a generous opening in the centre above the flame. The foil should sit around the rim, not touch the flame or wick, and it must not seal the candle closed.

Keep the candle under constant supervision while using this method. The glass can become hotter than usual, so place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface well away from curtains, children, pets and anything flammable. Stop if you notice excessive smoke, a high flickering flame or an unusually hot vessel. Let the candle cool fully before removing the foil and checking the surface.

This technique is best treated as an occasional rescue, not a standard burning routine. If a candle repeatedly tunnels despite correct wick care and adequate burn time, it may be better to contact the retailer or maker with photos and your burn details.

When the wick is buried

A deep tunnel can eventually leave the wick sitting below the wax line. Do not dig aggressively into the candle with a knife or sharp tool, as this can damage the wick or crack the vessel. Instead, once the candle is completely cool, gently remove only a small amount of loose wax around the wick with a spoon. Take care not to pull or bend the wick.

If the wick is too short to light safely, the candle may be nearing the end of what can be practically rescued. At that point, it is wiser not to force it. Never add extra wicks, pour in other wax or use makeshift materials to keep a candle burning.

Everyday habits that prevent tunnelling

Candle care is simple, but consistency makes a visible difference. Trim the wick before each use, keep the candle free from wick trimmings and burn it on a level surface. Let it cool completely before relighting. This allows the wax to reset and reduces the chance of an uneven, smoky burn.

Choose a calm location away from moving air. A candle placed beside a frequently opened door, under an air-conditioning vent or near a fan may burn unevenly no matter how carefully you trim the wick. A console table, coffee table or bathroom bench can be ideal, provided the surface is heat-safe and the candle has clear space around it.

Try to match your candle size to the time you have available. If you only want fragrance while getting ready in the morning, a room spray, reed diffuser or fragrance oil burner may be a more practical choice. Save a larger candle for a relaxed evening when you can enjoy its full glow and allow the wax to melt properly.

A few candle safety reminders

Never leave a burning candle unattended, and always extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep. Keep it away from children, pets, loose fabrics and clutter. Avoid burning a candle right down to the base of the vessel, as heat can build quickly once little wax remains.
